DREAMS IN SCRIBBLES

Hopes and dreams in ink

  • ABOUT THE AUTHOR

R.J Palacio is a writer and graphic designer. She lives in New York City. ‘Wonder’ is her first novel. She went on to write three companion books to ‘Wonder.’

    ABOUT THE BOOK

‘Wonder ‘is about a boy called August who is an ordinary kid in all ways except one. He was born with a facial deformity. He is homeschooled. Until now, that is! Then he enters his new school for the first time. People stare at him and say bad things behind his back. After a while, he manages to make some friends. Still, many are not nice to him. What can August do? Will his goodness win over his peers?

What makes this book unique is that not only we get to know August’s perspective but we also see August’s friends’ and his sister’s point of view.

This book has been published in more than 55 languages. R.J. Palacio got the idea about this book at an ice-cream shop when she saw a girl with a facial deformity.

    MY FAVOURITE CHARACTER

My favourite character was August’s sister, Olivia. She is kind and caring and is August’s best support. She always gives him good advice that makes him feel confident.

    MY FAVOURITE PART

I especially loved the part where August’s best friend, Jack, confronts a mean kid who had said nasty things about August. He supports August even when he himself was in trouble.

    MY THOUGHTS

Why do we judge people on their appearance? Is it fair? Our difference and uniqueness are what makes us special. This book teaches us that we should give importance to inner beauty and not outer beauty. Be kind. Always.

This is a brilliantly written book and a must read.

  • I start my journey from the snow-clad mountains

Jumping joyfully, I come down to the plains

The radiant sun shines through my water

I am lovingly called the beautiful earth’s daughter

I flow through many cities, towns and villages

Kids play in me while elders worship me since ages

Giving everyone my water, I feel so gleeful

Please don’t pollute me, be a little careful

Calm and serene, I run through my course

Splashing happily with rocks, I have no remorse

I finally join the ocean so mighty

Always be kind, compassionate and helpful just like me!

  • I have a friend who is quite cute and sweet

But all he wants to ever do is to eat eat eat

I have named him Hungry, you know why

He waits by the door staring at me with big brown eyes

He squeaks with delight everytime he sees me with his food

Dancing with him always brightens my mood

When I give him food, he immediately gobbles it up

He doesn’t even want his food in a plate or a cup

How is it so? You may wonder

Grab a sit and take a minute to ponder

You see Hungry is none other than a peacock

Everyday I sit by him and we eat some peanuts and talk!

  • I once had a really funny dream

I saw some elephants which were trying to swim

Giraffes were twirling around and dancing ballet

I looked up and saw some fish flying away

Dogs were singing melodiously instead of barking

All the trees were laughing and talking

A man with a big moustache drove his car straight up a rainbow

There was an upside-down waterfall with water that glowed

As I was floating on my beautiful cloud

‘Time for school’ I heard my mother shout

I wish my dream would come true one day

But I will have to go to school today!
